I spy on a car journey Super Series

[1]  On A Car Journey

This first title set the standard, with excellent colour and black and white illustrations, plus a few photographs, signs and other visual graphics. The illustrations were by Martin Henley.

I Spy Cars Super Series

[2]  Cars

An update of the old 6d series title. It had cut-away drawing showing the working of a car, photos of interiors, and cars were grouped under marque or type – so a nice spread of American vehicles, or two pages of Jaguars.

I Spy abroad Super Series

[3]  Abroad

A great title, looking at currency, eating out, customs staff, foreign signs and other exotica for the young children of 1965 going to Europe for the first time. Illustrations by Martin Henley.

I Spy all year round Super Series

[4]  All The Year Round

This title was new to the range.

I spy ships and boats Super Series

[5]  Ships and Boats

A real leap on from the original 6d Ships And Harbours title, and again very nicely illustrated. The artist is Brian Wilson.

I Spy garden flowersSuper Series

[6] Garden Flowers

I-Spy had done Wild Flowers in the 1/- colour series, and also In The Garden, so this combined the two. It is less lively than the other titles, and the illustrator is not credited either. It could be D W Ovenden.

I spy on a train journey Super Series

[7]  On A Train Journey

An update of the old 6d series title.

I Spy British wild animals Super Series

[8]  British Wild Animals – June 1966

This title was new to the range, and was similar to the earlier Ladybird book of the same name. However it was aimed at a slightly older child. The illustrations are by D W Ovenden and are as good as any book on wild animals aimed at grown-ups.

I Spy at the zoo Super Series

[9]  At The Zoo – June 1966

An update of the old 6d series title.

I Spy archaeology Super Series

[10]  Archaeology

Another new title, and one which was redone in the smaller format in 1974 after this series was cancelled.

I Spy Animals In Danger Super Series

[11] Animals In Danger

Published in association with the Wildlife Youth Service and priced uniquely at 3/6d.

I Spy On The Seashore Super Series

[12] On The Seashore – April 1968

An update of the old 6d series title. Cover by D W Ovenden.

Better scans of the poorer covers would be appreciated.
