News Chronicle Songs For The Forces booklet

This interesting booklet turned up in a charity shop recently. It is one of a series of songs and music titles published by News Chronicle, and is exactly the same size, format, binding and paper type as the early News Chronicle I-Spy books (although it was actually printed and bound by music publishers Novello and Co.).
Did it provide inspiration for the book format? It’s impossible to say after more than seven decades, but it’s hard not to think someone used it as a template. Even the 6d price is the same! This title was issued during WW2 and aimed at members of “the armed forces and Civil Defence Units”, in the hope that it would provide some recreation in a time when a “happy diversion is most needed.” Six years later News Chronicle would issue their first I-Spy books, providing another form of recreation for children.
