Deep Purple • Denmark 1972 DVD

This Deep Purple DVD came out around the same time as another live show by the group (California Jam 1974) in 2005 so the concept was to have some continuity between the two designs, which might then carry on with any future releases (I don’t think there were any).  This show was filmed in Denmark in 1972 and nobody could locate any photographs which included the entire group, so I decided to put together a montage of live photographs from the concert.  Getting these to match in tone and contrast wasn’t easy but overall I was reasonably happy with the end result. The drum kit enabled us to add the required promo info, and I gave it all a purple tone to help blend everything together.  On the back cover I resorted to using some freeze frames, as I knew these would only been seen small, so quality was less of an issue.  Again I prepared the commentary, booklet, on screen menus etc.

I wasn’t aware at the time but EMI prepared some special promotional copies of the DVD but in a regular CD size case and with a card overwrap with the same artwork looking rather lost!  Apparently the idea was for record shops to slip these in with the CD stock and point buyers to the DVD, and they are now quite collectable.  I always badgered labels for samples, and EMI kindly punted a couple my way (shown below).

The actual dvd quality is quite primitive by todays all singing all dancing music films, and was shot by the Danish state broadcaster in glorious mono, but is a great performance by the band at their best.
