Secret of Life • It’s Only Real CD single

Although most of my time was devoted to the CD reissue label RPM during the early 1990s, we did sometimes get tempted by new bands. This was one, a single suggested to us by a friend in Hull where the band were based. From what I remember the band put a cassette edition together themselves and then dithered over whether to let us do the CD. In the meantime the NME music paper got hold of the tape and made it single of the week! By the time we had got it mastered and produced, the buzz from the NME rating had passed and it was hard to catch up. The band had the idea for an eye on the cover, which I took away and worked on in a number of layers. Inside were a series of tiny images and all the text which looking back do come across as a bit 4AD looking though it didn’t strike me that way at the time. We didn’t have the budget to do a proper digipak so it came out in a slimline plastic case in 1995 (and certainly there was very little market for vinyl at the time which is what I’d really designed it for!). I do remember doing some low cost promo posters for the local shops and to use at gigs too. The band played quite a lot in and around Hull at the time. In truth I thought – and still do – that the single was brilliant, and I was likewise impressed by the band live at places like the famous Adelphi club. We were very much up for doing an album but the band seemed to come apart for reasons we never understood, I think the singer moved to Sheffield making rehearsals hard. If you get the chance to buy a second hand copy take it.
