Triang Frog MG1100 car kit

This kit was made in the 1960s by Frog, part of the Triang toy group. They are made of polythene and clip together, aimed at younger children. The model included a small battery powered motor, and the front wheels steered. Each kit came with a sheet of silver stickers featuring a number plate and chrome parts. The box designs are really bright and eye catching, with strong solid red, yellow and blue colours and a combination of painted illustrations and line art diagrams. As well as keeping the model safe, once opened the box could be cut up and made into a garage or petrol station to house the car.

They only made a few models in this series, but got extra mileage by using the mould to generate other models in the range – so this is the MG1100, and you could also buy a Morris 1100 and a Vanden Plas 1100. Frog had made similar motorised vehicles before this and to the same scale, including an E-Type Jaguar.

Today the models are quite rare particularly with the box in good condition, for obvious reasons! Note the Price box on the end, the retailer has priced this up in pencil on the front at 7s 8d, about 38p in decimal currency. Like any good collector mine – which I actually found in an empty house – will remain boxed, but below are a couple I spotted on the internet.
