Judy Says … Happy Easter

Whether Judy was a character tie-in from a children’s book or just an invention of Rowntrees & Co Ltd. in York I don’t know, but she appears in a striped jersey, French beret and scarf on this Dairy Box easter egg, sold in the 1950s.  The child who received the egg was clearly pleased with it as they decided to save the box, which also features other ‘traditional’ easter motifs including lambs and rabbits. The themes remain although easter egg packaging generally sports more ‘in your face’ branding today.

The second box was probably aimed at an older market, with a chintzy tulip, violet and daffodill illustration repeated on each side of a sturdier Fry’s Chocolate box, which was then used for storing bits and bobs in for more than 60 years.
