Stocking packet design • 4

Six more vintage nylons packets “to catch the eye of the passer by” as the Eye Delight cover promises.  The Roman Lady design suggests Italian sophistication through some sketchy drawings of old buildings and a coach.  The curious Pex artwork carries some strange (to us) signals, “smart girls don’t run” with cartoon images of women in birdcages! The very striking Tri Val packet design is a curious piece of work. I can only assume TV Stockings was somehow designed to reflect the boom in television popularity in the early Sixties, but don’t really understand the connection! In complete contract there is the Morley Agility packet, which is probably from the early seventies, and relies instead on the sort of line drawing popular at the time. Lastly there is the illustration for Plaza stockings in “Britain’s new Nylon”. Enkalon was launched here around 1960 and products began to be introduced a couple of years after that which puts this at around 1963. Using this new nylon product enabled the buyer to “Show a prettier leg” ! Plaza as a brand goes back into the 1930s but the strange little logo of the dog seems to have only appeared in the 1950s.
