Our Island Story • Jigsaw

Our Island Story jigsaw 2.jpg

I’m rarely defeated by an old jigsaw puzzle but this one proved too much.  I do like the often populist paintings which decorate most jigsaws pre-1960s, and this one depicting the events of the Battle Of Britain was a nice charity shop find.  I cannot find out much about the makers, Good-Win, but think it will date from the early 1950s.  It’s one of  a series they titled Our Island Story, along with one depicting the Battle of Hastings (they’re the only two listed).

Apart from the illustration (I cannot make out the artists name), which is not exactly top quality but just about covers the brief, the box art is really garish and bright; primary colours, mad hand drawn lettering, and as eye catching as they could make it really.  As a jigsaw it started out well enough but once I got into the sky and landscape areas there just wasn’t enough detail to enable me to make out where pieces went anymore (short of trying every piece in every space which isn’t my idea of fun!) so reluctantly I called it a day as we needed the table top back.

I have spotted the other jigsaw on sale so been able to grab a photo to show here.  There is a nice seaside jigsaw box art on the site.
