Steve Fellows • Mood X CD

From 1997 a low-key project for an ambient guitar based project which Steve Fellows immersed himself in after his band The Comsat Angels entered a period of inactivity in the 1990s (they did later reform for a handful of shows).

Like the music the cover I kept similarly minimal.  The image likely came from looking through some of Steve’s books of space photography, and was then scanned, descreened, cropped and tinted to produce the ethereal look.  Gill Sans is my favourite typeface anyway and that seemed to work well, placed discreetly in the centre; if you take it away the cover just doesn’t really work.  The same image was then inverted to produce the inner side of the digipak, and a tiny illustration of a vintage 1950s space craft added.  This was lifted off an old bubble gum card which Steve had likely collected (I’m still obsessed with those old cards myself).  A white tray was specified to hold the CD.  You have to pay a bit extra for any variation from the norm when making a CD but it would have looked wrong in black, the same with the digipak. Overall it became a lovely artifact, which is what matters. I still do not get downloads at all. It was issued on English Electric, which was part of RPM Records.
